5. Myrmekite Formed by Exsolution?

چکیده

At the first site, the Weinsberg (Moldanubian) granite and an older quartzmonzonite facies of the South Bohemian pluton in Austria both contain orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene and must have crystallized from magmas at high temperatures. The granite contains orthoclase megacrysts (as much as 10 to 20 cm long), which (1) are chemically zoned with Ba-rich cores (1 to 2 % mol Cs; and locally as much as 6 to 8 % Cs) and (2) are mineralogically zoned with aligned inclusions of plagioclase whose subhedral to euhedral faces are parallel to potential faces of the orthoclase (from illustrations at poster session, III Hutton Symposium, Koller and Kloetzli, 1995; personal communication, Koller, 1996). The megacrysts are perthitic and locally are bordered by small bulbous myrmekite with tiny quartz vermicules. Plagioclase lamellae are absent in the orthoclase adjacent to the myrmekite. The myrmekite is also associated with symplectic biotite which Koller and Kloetzli (1995) suggest is formed by the breakdown reaction orthopyroxene + K-feldspar + water = biotite + quartz.

Three-dimensional cooling pattern of a granitic pluton II: The study of deuteric sub-solidus reactions in the Toki granite, Central Japan

Petrographical studies examining the development and variations of sub-solidus reactions recorded in the Toki granite represent the three-dimensional cooling pattern of this zoned pluton in Central Japan. Samples collected from 19 boreholes in the Toki granite show characteristics indicative of spatial variations in the extent of the sub-solidus reactions. Exsolution coarsening has produced mic...

A photomicrographic essay illustrating replacement textures

A sequence of sixteen photomicrographs of thin sections of unaltered quartz diorite through a zone of deformation to myrmekite-bearing granite near Temecula, California, shows the textural and mineralogical changes that occurred in a quartz diorite as (1) K-metasomatism altered the primary plagioclase crystals to form microcline, myrmekite, quartz-bleb clusters, and recrystallized sodic plagioc...

Nano-socketed nickel particles with enhanced coking resistance grown in situ by redox exsolution

Metal particles supported on oxide surfaces are used as catalysts for a wide variety of processes in the chemical and energy conversion industries. For catalytic applications, metal particles are generally formed on an oxide support by physical or chemical deposition, or less commonly by exsolution from it. Although fundamentally different, both methods might be assumed to produce morphological...

Mantled feldspars and synneusis

Synneusis, the drifting together and systematic attachment of crystals in a melt, is involved in three of the known origins for mantled feldspars: (1) overgrowth, (2) exsolution, and (3) filling of skeletal plagioclase. Quartz latite dikes of the Chocolate Mountains, California, contain plagioclase crystals in parallel and twinned synneusis. Sanidine mantles consisting of segments, each crystal...

Distinct kimberlite pipe classes with contrasting eruption processes

Field and Scott Smith [Field, M., Scott Smith, B.H., 1999. Contrasting geology and near-surface emplacement of kimberlite pipes in southern Africa and Canada. Proc. 7th Int. Kimb. Conf. (Eds. Gurney et al.) 1, 214–237.] propose that kimberlite pipes can be grouped into three types or classes. Classical or Class 1 pipes are the only class with characteristic low temperature, diatreme-facies kimb...
